Some may just wonder about the idea of the Little Exporter Initiative and how this unique idea stemmed from the mind of an Egyptian girl who was the youngest worker in the field of exporting medicinal and aromatic plants. In March 2017, Radwa ElKalifa launched the initiative for the first time in the governorate of Fayoum. She adopted this idea and applied it both technically and financially at her own expense. Through this initiative, she invited universities, especially the Faculty of Agriculture and agricultural associations, as well as major companies working in the medicinal and aromatic plants, to adopt the idea and work together to apply it through greater, deeper, and more comprehensive capabilities. The initiative was well received and had great repercussions that it was shown on many television channels, radio stations. She was invited by the American UNIDO to present the initiative at the Youth Employment Forum that took place at South Valley University, Luxor. It was well received by the students and the university staff as well as government agencies there. This is not strange to Radwa, as she is not a newbie in this field. She has had the experience since 2006.

The Little Exporter Initiative is a serious milestone in the path that Radwa has taken for her community in order to support the field of exporting medicinal and aromatic plants in Egypt. There are many factors that motivated her to spread the idea of the initiative launched in July 2017, the most important of which are:

1-She believes in her duty towards developing and taking care of the field of exporting medicinal plants and herbs as she is one of the pioneers in this field in Egypt.

2-The initiative presented the problems facing the export of herbs in its various production stages, starting with the receipt of the herbs and its preparation till the delivery to the customer and whether it is approved or rejected by the importer.

3-The initiative main aim was to train graduates and students of the Faculty of Agriculture and other people interested in the field of herbs of various medicinal and aromatic types. This helped in making use of the large amount of plants that Fayoum Governorate is famous for. This in return would help young people to practically apply the theoretical aspects that have been studied in the faculty, benefiting them and the society as a whole and contributing to providing job opportunities for young people.

4-Her keenness to increase the rate of Egyptian exports of medicinal and aromatic plants, supporting the national economy, pushing the wheel of production forward, and increasing the national income through the introduction of foreign currency, which could help in increasing the value of the Egyptian currency as the country was going through critical economic conditions due the floatation of the Egyptian pound and the rise of the value of the U.S dollar.

5-Her keenness for providing an Egyptian product that is capable of competing in the international markets She put a slogan for the product reflecting the main idea of the initiative; “ An Egyptian product made by the hands of Egyptian youth”.

The content of the Initiative

The initiative took three intensive days. It tackled different issues related to processing and exporting medicinal and aromatic plants as follows:

1 -Day one : It included a set of theoretical discussions about the basics of export along with a comprehensive explanation of the company departments and the role of each one. Furthermore, the attendees were introduced to the idea of establishing a company and the required documents and statements needed to do that.

2 -Day Two : It included a practical application of the basics introduced on day one by heading to the farm and seeing the products there, and watching how to properly collect the plants, dry them and then carry them to the plant and see the real stages of production, processing and packaging.

3 - Day Three : It was the last day of the initiative, on which the attendees learned about different sets of containers and how the herbs are safely loaded inside them. Problems related to loading these herbs and how to overcome them were also discussed.
